When Is Ramadan 2027?

The short answer

Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027. The first night of Taraweeh would then fall on the evening of Sunday 7 February, since the Islamic day begins at sunset.

How that date is worked out

Islamic months are lunar. A new month can only begin once the moon has passed conjunction and the thin crescent has become visible after sunset. Calendars such as Umm al-Qura pre-compute this astronomically so that dates can be printed years in advance, and in most years the computed date matches the announced one.

What would move the date

  • Visibility. If the crescent is too low or too thin to be seen on 29 Sha‘ban, Sha‘ban completes thirty days and Ramadan begins a day later.
  • Criteria. Some authorities accept a calculated conjunction, others require an actual sighting report, and some require the sighting to be within their own territory.
  • Geography. The crescent is easier to see further west on any given evening, so western countries sometimes sight it a day before eastern ones.

The country and city pages on this site give the projected timetable for your location, including the daily Sehri and Iftar times. For the binding date, follow your local mosque or your country’s moon-sighting committee.

On the dates: every date on this page is an astronomical projection based on the Umm al-Qura calendar. The observed start of Ramadan is decided by the sighting of the crescent moon or by the announcement of the relevant authority in each country, and can differ by a day. Follow your local mosque or national committee for the binding date.
