How the Qibla is calculated

The Qibla is the great-circle direction from where you stand to the Kaaba at 21.4225° N, 39.8262° E. The calculator uses spherical trigonometry, which is why the correct bearing on a flat map can look surprising — from London it is about 118°, roughly east-south-east.

How to use it

  1. Press Use my location, or type your coordinates.
  2. Read the bearing in degrees from true north and the matching compass point.
  3. On a phone, press Use device compass to rotate the dial live; keep the phone flat and away from metal.

Accuracy

The bearing is exact for the coordinates given. Phone compasses drift, so calibrate with a figure-of-eight motion, and remember that magnetic north differs from true north in many regions.

Frequently asked questions

What if my compass is not working?

Use the numeric bearing with any standalone compass or map app, or align with a known landmark whose direction you can verify.

Is a small deviation a problem?

Facing the general direction of the Kaaba is sufficient according to the majority of scholars, especially when you are far away.
