How the Qibla is calculated
The Qibla is the great-circle direction from where you stand to the Kaaba at 21.4225° N, 39.8262° E. The calculator uses spherical trigonometry, which is why the correct bearing on a flat map can look surprising — from London it is about 118°, roughly east-south-east.

What the bearing means
The Qibla bearing is the initial great-circle direction from the selected coordinates toward the Kaaba. Great-circle versus flat-map direction
The shortest path on a sphere can look unintuitive on a rectangular map projection. That is why a Qibla bearing should be calculated geodesically rather than by drawing a straight visual line across a Mercator map.
