What makes a Sehri actually last
Three things determine how long a pre-dawn meal carries you: how slowly the carbohydrate releases, how much protein and fat sit alongside it, and how much fluid you take in. A bowl of sugary cereal fails on all three, which is why it feels like it disappears by mid-morning.
The three components worth having
- A slow carbohydrate — oats, wholegrain bread, cracked wheat, lentils or brown rice.
- Protein — eggs, yoghurt, cheese, pulses or meat. This is what most people are short of at Sehri.
- Some fat — olive oil, nuts, avocado or ghee. It slows the whole meal down.
What to go easy on
- Very salty food, which increases thirst through the day.
- Large amounts of caffeine, which increases fluid loss and disturbs what sleep is left.
- Refined sugar, which produces an early energy dip.
The real problem is not appetite
Most people who skip Sehri do so because of effort, not hunger. Anything that needs decisions or cooking at four in the morning tends not to happen. Half the recipes here are made the night before for exactly that reason. The Prophet said: “Take suhoor, for in suhoor there is blessing” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1923) — and eating it late, close to Fajr, is the reported practice.
Fluid at Sehri
Have a full glass of water with the meal, and another before Fajr if you can. Fluid taken at Sehri does more for the fasting day than any single food on the plate.
