Ramadan 2027 Moon Sighting

The rule in the sunnah

Ramadan begins with the sighting of the crescent moon after sunset on the 29th of Sha‘ban. If it is not sighted, Sha‘ban completes thirty days. The Prophet said: “Fast when you see it and stop fasting when you see it; if it is obscured from you, then complete thirty days” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1909; Sahih Muslim 1081).

What astronomy contributes

Astronomy can state precisely when the moon passes conjunction and how high and how illuminated the crescent will be at sunset on any given evening. What it cannot do is guarantee that a human eye will see it, since that also depends on haze, dust, cloud and the observer’s horizon.

Why countries announce different dates

  • Local versus global sighting. Some scholars hold that a confirmed sighting anywhere binds all Muslims; others hold that each region follows its own. Both positions are argued from the same texts.
  • Calculation versus observation. Some authorities accept astronomical calculation as sufficient; others require a witnessed sighting.
  • Geography. On any given evening the crescent is older and higher further west, so it is often visible in the Americas before it is visible in Asia.

The report of Kurayb

Kurayb told Ibn Abbas that the people of Syria had begun fasting on a Friday. Ibn Abbas said that in Madinah they had seen it on Saturday and would continue until they completed thirty days or saw the moon themselves (Sahih Muslim 1087). Scholars have cited this ever since when discussing regional differences.

What to do in practice

Follow your local mosque or national committee. A difference of a day between you and relatives in another country is a long-standing feature of the lunar calendar, not a sign that either community is wrong.

On the dates: 8 February 2027 is the site’s current planning date for the first fast and is not presented as a confirmed moon-sighting date. Published future calendars also label 2027 dates tentative. Follow the recognised authority or method used by your community for the confirmed start.

Frequently asked questions

Can Ramadan be decided by calculation alone?

Some authorities do so, and some scholars accept it. Others require an actual sighting. Both positions have scholarly support, and communities follow their own authority.

Why do neighbouring countries sometimes differ?

Because sighting criteria differ and because the crescent’s visibility genuinely varies with longitude and local conditions.

When is the sighting for Ramadan 2027?

On the evening of 29 Sha‘ban 1448, which is expected to fall on or about 7 February 2027.
