Why it works for Sehri

  • Some people cannot eat before dawn and end up fasting on nothing at all. A dense drink is far better than skipping Sehri entirely.
  • Peanut butter and milk supply protein and fat, so despite being a drink it does not empty from the stomach as fast as juice would.
  • It carries a large volume of fluid at the exact point in the day when that matters most.

Ingredients

  • 2 bananasripe, frozen if you planned ahead
  • 400 ml milkdairy or oat
  • 4 Medjool datespitted, about 60 g
  • 2 tbsp peanut buttersmooth, no added sugar
  • 4 tbsp rolled oats
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseedoptional
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt

Method

  1. 1Load the blender2 min

Put the bananas, dates, 4 tbsp oats, 2 tbsp peanut butter, 1 tbsp flaxseed, 1/2 tsp cinnamon and a pinch of salt into the jug, then pour in 400 ml milk.

  2. 2Blend2 min

Blend on high for 60 to 90 seconds. The oats and dates need the full time or the texture stays gritty.

  3. 3Serve1 min

Pour into two glasses and drink straight away. Follow with a glass of water.

Notes that make the difference

  • Soak the dates in a little warm milk for five minutes first if your blender is not powerful.
  • This is a supplement to fluid, not a replacement. Still drink plain water at Sehri.

Storing and reheating

Drink fresh. It separates and thickens within an hour.

Substitutions

  • Nut allergy: use tahini or sunflower seed butter in the same quantity.
  • Thicker and colder: freeze the bananas the night before.

Cooking times assume a standard domestic hob and oven and will vary with your equipment. No nutritional figures are given: calculating them reliably needs the exact brand and weight of every ingredient, and an invented number would be worse than none.
