Ramadan Dua Library

Around fifty supplications for Ramadan, grouped by when you would use them. Each one gives the Arabic, a transliteration, the meaning in English, and its source — with the grading stated, so you can tell an authentic narration from a weak one or from a wording that is simply customary.

Suhoor and the intention to fast

The intention to fast is an act of the heart formed before Fajr; no spoken formula is required for it. The supplications below are the authentic ones connected to the meal and the time before dawn.

Transliteration: Bismillah

Meaning: In the name of Allah.

Authentic (sahih) Sahih al-Bukhari 5376; Sahih Muslim 2022 — said before eating.

Transliteration: Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu

Meaning: In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end.

Hasan sahih Sunan Abi Dawud 3767; Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 1858 — said if the mention of Allah was forgotten at the start of the meal.

Good (hasan) Sunan Abi Dawud 4023; Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3458 — said after finishing a meal.

Transliteration: Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana wa qina ‘adhab an-nar

Meaning: O Allah, bless for us what You have provided us, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Good (hasan) Reported in Musnad Ahmad and Sunan Ibn Majah 3264 in wordings on blessing the provision.

Authentic (sahih) Sahih al-Bukhari 6682; Sahih Muslim 2694 — two phrases light on the tongue and heavy on the scale.

Customary wording, not a narration A widely circulated formula, not a narration from the Prophet ﷺ. The established requirement is the intention itself before Fajr — Sunan Abi Dawud 2454.

Breaking the fast

The supplication most Muslims know and use at iftar is the first below. Its chain is mursal, so hadith specialists grade it weak, and that is noted honestly — but its meaning is entirely sound, it has been used across the Muslim world for centuries, and many scholars permit acting on weak narrations in matters of virtue. The second is the best-authenticated wording reported at the time of breaking the fast, and is given alongside it.

Transliteration: Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika aamantu wa ‘alayka tawakkaltu wa ‘ala rizqika aftartu

Meaning: O Allah, for You I have fasted, in You I believe, upon You I rely, and with Your provision I break my fast.

Widely used; chain graded weak Sunan Abi Dawud 2358, with the fuller wording also reported through al-Tabarani. The chain is mursal, so specialists grade it weak and it is not attributed to the Prophet ﷺ with certainty — but it is a permissible and very widely used supplication.

Transliteration: Dhahaba az-zama’u wabtallatil-‘urooqu wa thabatal-ajru in sha’ Allah

Meaning: The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills.

Good (hasan) Sunan Abi Dawud 2357 — reported from Ibn Umar. This is the best-authenticated wording reported at the time of breaking the fast.

Transliteration: Aftara ‘indakum as-sa’imun wa akala ta‘amakum al-abrar wa sallat ‘alaykum al-mala’ikah

Meaning: May fasting people break their fast with you, may the righteous eat your food, and may the angels send blessings upon you.

Authentic (sahih) Sunan Abi Dawud 3854 — said by a guest for the host.

Transliteration: Allahumma at‘im man at‘amani wasqi man saqani

Transliteration: Allahumma barik lahum fima razaqtahum waghfir lahum warhamhum

Meaning: O Allah, bless them in what You have provided them, and forgive them and have mercy on them.

Authentic (sahih) Sahih Muslim 2042 — a supplication for those who provide food.

Transliteration: Alhamdu lillahi alladhi at‘amana wa saqana wa ja‘alana muslimin

Meaning: All praise is for Allah, who fed us and gave us drink and made us Muslims.

Good (hasan) Sunan Abi Dawud 3850; Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3457.

Transliteration: Rabbana taqabbal minna innaka anta as-Sami‘ al-‘Alim

Transliteration: Allahumma inni as’aluka birahmatika allati wasi‘at kulla shay’in an taghfira li

Meaning: O Allah, I ask You by Your mercy, which encompasses all things, that You forgive me.

Grading differed over Sunan Ibn Majah 1753 — reported in connection with the supplication of the fasting person at the time of breaking the fast; scholars differ on its grading.

Seeking forgiveness

Ramadan is described in the hadith as a month in which sins are forgiven for the one who fasts and stands in prayer out of faith and seeking reward (Sahih al-Bukhari 38 and 37).
