Why it works for Iftar

  • The reported practice is to break the fast on fresh dates, or dry dates, or otherwise a few sips of water (Sunan Abi Dawud 2356).
  • Breaking lightly, praying Maghrib, and then eating gives the stomach fifteen minutes to adjust before the main meal, which is why this order leaves people far less uncomfortable.
  • Dates supply fast sugar that lifts a flagging blood sugar quickly, which is exactly what is wanted in the first minute.

Ingredients

  • 12 datesMedjool, Ajwa or any variety — 3 per person
  • 1 litre waterroom temperature, not iced
  • 4 glassesfor the water
  • 250 ml milkoptional, for those who prefer dates with milk
  • 1 lemonoptional, sliced into the water jug

Method

  1. 1Set the table before Maghrib3 min

Put the dates in a bowl and fill a jug with room-temperature water. Have it ready at least ten minutes before the adhan so nobody is rushing.

  2. 2Break the fast1 min

At Maghrib, eat two or three dates and drink a glass of water slowly. Say the reported supplication: Dhahaba az-zama’u wabtallatil-‘urooqu wa thabatal-ajru in sha’ Allah (Sunan Abi Dawud 2357).

  3. 3Pray Maghrib1 min

Leave the main meal until after the prayer. This short gap is the single most effective thing you can do to avoid feeling heavy afterwards.

  4. 4Then eat

Come back to the table and eat the main meal at a normal pace.

Notes that make the difference

  • Room-temperature water is easier on an empty stomach than iced water.
  • Three dates is enough. A large plate of sweets at this moment is the usual reason for the post-iftar slump.

Storing and reheating

Dates keep for months in a sealed container; refrigerate fresh ones.

Substitutions

  • No dates: a few sips of water alone is the reported alternative.
  • Some communities break the fast on dates with milk or laban, which is a settled local custom.

Cooking times assume a standard domestic hob and oven and will vary with your equipment. No nutritional figures are given: calculating them reliably needs the exact brand and weight of every ingredient, and an invented number would be worse than none.
