Overnight Oats with Dates and Almonds
Made the night before, eaten cold straight from the fridge. The best answer to the fact that almost nobody wants to cook at four in the morning.
Why it works for Sehri
- Oats are a slow-release carbohydrate, so the energy arrives gradually across the morning rather than all at once and then gone.
- The milk and almonds add protein and fat, which slow digestion further and keep hunger away longer than oats alone would.
- It needs no cooking and no decisions at Sehri time, which is the single biggest reason people skip the meal.
- It carries a lot of fluid, which matters more than most people expect on a fasting day.
Ingredients
- 100 g rolled oatsabout 1 cup — not instant oats, which go to paste
- 300 ml milkdairy or unsweetened almond milk
- 4 tbsp plain yoghurtfull-fat holds up better overnight
- 6 Medjool datespitted and chopped, about 90 g
- 30 g almondsroughly 25 nuts, chopped
- 1 tbsp chia seedsoptional, thickens the mix
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp saltbrings out the sweetness of the dates
Method
- 1Combine the base3 min
In a bowl, stir together 100 g rolled oats, 1 tbsp chia seeds, 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 1/4 tsp salt until the dry ingredients are evenly mixed.
- 2Add the liquid3 min
Pour in 300 ml milk and 4 tbsp yoghurt. Stir for about a minute until no dry oats remain at the bottom of the bowl. The mixture should look loose — it will thicken considerably overnight.
- 3Fold in dates and almonds3 min
Stir through the chopped dates and two thirds of the almonds, keeping the rest back so they stay crunchy at Sehri.
- 4Portion and chill1 min
Divide between two jars or bowls, cover, and refrigerate for at least six hours. Overnight is ideal.
- 5At Sehri1 min
Take it straight from the fridge, top with the reserved almonds, and eat cold. If it has set firmer than you like, loosen it with a splash of milk.
Notes that make the difference
- Make two or three nights at once on a weekend and keep them in the fridge — they hold for three days.
- Do not add extra sugar. Six Medjool dates are already sweet, and a sugar spike before a long fast is exactly what you do not want.
Storing and reheating
Keeps covered in the fridge for up to 3 days. Do not freeze — the oats turn watery on thawing.
Substitutions
- No almonds: use walnuts, pistachios or pumpkin seeds in the same quantity.
- Dairy-free: unsweetened almond or oat milk, and a coconut yoghurt.
- No chia: leave it out and reduce the milk to 260 ml.
Cooking times assume a standard domestic hob and oven and will vary with your equipment. No nutritional figures are given: calculating them reliably needs the exact brand and weight of every ingredient, and an invented number would be worse than none.
