Zakat al-Fitr 2027

What it is

Ibn ‘Umar said the Prophet ﷺ made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory: one sa‘ of dates or one sa‘ of barley, upon every Muslim, free or slave, male or female, young or old (Sahih al-Bukhari 1503).

How much

One sa‘ is approximately 2.5–3 kg of the staple food of the region, per person in the household. Many mosques publish a local monetary equivalent each year.

Food or money?

The majority of scholars require it in food; the Hanafi school permits its monetary value. Both positions are long-established — follow your school or your local mosque’s guidance.

When

It must reach the poor before the Eid prayer (Sunan Abu Dawud 1609). Paying it a day or two earlier is permitted and is safer logistically. For 2027 that means on or before the morning of the projected Eid on 10 March.

Calculate your household total with the Zakat al-Fitr Calculator.

Dates are astronomical projections for 1448 AH. The actual day of Eid depends on the sighting of the Shawwal crescent in your country — confirm with your local mosque.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay for children and dependants?

Yes — the head of the household pays on behalf of everyone under their care, including a newborn born before the Eid prayer.
