Nigeria has one of the largest Muslim populations in Africa, concentrated in the north and with substantial communities in the south-west. Islam entered through the Kanem-Bornu empire in the eleventh century by way of trans-Saharan trade, and spread further through the Hausa city states — Kano was a major centre of Islamic scholarship and commerce for centuries.
The Sokoto Caliphate, established in the early nineteenth century, shaped the religious institutions of northern Nigeria and its influence on scholarship and jurisprudence remains visible today.
The fast is broken with dates and water, then kunun aya or kunun gyada — millet and groundnut drinks that are strongly associated with the month. Fura da nono, tuwo, masa and suya follow. In the south-west, Yoruba Muslim households serve moin moin, akara and jollof rice.
Communal iftar at mosques is widespread, and the distribution of grain and foodstuffs to poor households intensifies sharply during the month.
Tafsir sessions — public Qur’anic commentary delivered daily through Ramadan by senior scholars — are a defining feature of the month in northern Nigeria, drawing very large audiences in Kano, Sokoto and Zaria, and broadcast on radio and television.
