Ramadan in India

India is home to one of the largest Muslim populations of any country, despite Muslims being a minority of roughly fourteen per cent. Islam reached the Malabar coast of Kerala in the seventh century through Arab sea trade — the Cheraman Juma Mosque there is traditionally held to be among the oldest in the subcontinent — long before the wider spread across northern India from the twelfth century onwards.

Because the community is spread across a country of continental scale, Ramadan looks very different from place to place: Hyderabad, Lucknow, Delhi, Kolkata, Malappuram and Srinagar each have their own distinct practices, foods and mosque traditions.

Regional iftar traditions

Hyderabad is known for haleem, cooked in huge vats through the month and shipped nationwide. Old Delhi’s Jama Masjid area fills with kebab, nihari and phirni stalls. In Kerala, iftar centres on tharavadu-style rice dishes, pathiri and unnakkaya. Lucknow serves its own nihari and sheermal.

The common opening is the same everywhere: dates, water, fruit chaat and a fried starter, then the main meal after Maghrib.

Moon sighting and dates

India often begins Ramadan a day after Saudi Arabia, since local sighting is followed and the country lies well to the east. Different regions occasionally differ from one another too — Kerala frequently follows a day earlier than the north. A difference of a day within one country is normal and long-established in the lunar calendar.

Hadith about Ramadan

2

When Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hellfire are closed, and the devils are chained.

5

Whoever gives food to a fasting person to break his fast shall have a reward like his, without any decrease in the fasting person’s reward.

6

Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need of his giving up his food and drink.

7
