Ramadan in Australia

The 2021 census recorded Muslims as around three per cent of Australians. The presence is older than usually assumed: Makassan fishermen from Sulawesi visited northern Australia from the 1700s, and Afghan cameleers who opened the inland routes from the 1860s built the country’s first mosques, including the Adelaide Mosque in 1888.

A summer Ramadan in 2027

Because Australia is in the southern hemisphere, February places Ramadan 1448 in late summer. Fasts will be at the longer end of the Australian cycle, and heat is a real factor — particularly for outdoor workers. Planning fluid intake across the whole evening, and reducing daytime exertion where possible, matters more in an Australian February Ramadan than in a July one.

The month in practice

The Ramadan Nights street festival in Lakemba, Sydney, runs nightly through the month and draws very large crowds from across the city, Muslim and non-Muslim alike. Mosques in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth run community iftars, and school and workplace accommodations are generally arranged informally on request.
