Fasting Hours: What Sets the Length of Your Fast
The whole calculation in one line
Your fast runs from the entry of Fajr to sunset. Its length is therefore the gap between those two times, and nothing else affects it — not the school you follow, not the country you are in, not the year. Only your latitude, the date, and the Fajr method you use.
Why latitude matters more than anything
Near the equator, day length barely changes through the year, so a fast is close to twelve or thirteen hours whatever season Ramadan falls in. The further you move from the equator, the more the seasons stretch and compress the day, and the more dramatic the difference between a Ramadan in June and a Ramadan in December.
In February 2027, when Ramadan 1448 is expected, the northern hemisphere is in late winter and the southern hemisphere in late summer. That means northern countries get some of their shorter fasts of the cycle, while Australia, South Africa, Argentina and Chile get some of their longer ones. The picture reverses roughly sixteen years later.
Why the number shifts day to day
The daylight period changes by a minute or two each day as the earth moves through its orbit. Over a thirty-day Ramadan that accumulates into a noticeable difference between the first fast and the last — usually half an hour or so at mid-latitudes, and more the further from the equator you are.
How to read the result
The calculator gives the duration for the date and place you enter, and the city pages give the figure for all thirty days at once. If the number looks different from a friend’s in the same city, check the Fajr method: an 18° Fajr and a 15° Fajr can differ by twenty minutes, and that difference passes straight into the fasting hours.
Very long days
Where a fast becomes extreme, or where the sun does not properly set, this is not a matter for a calculator. Fiqh councils have permitted estimating the times from the nearest location with a normal day, or from Makkah, and communities in those regions follow the ruling their scholars have adopted. Islam does not require anyone to endanger their health, and the Qur’an says plainly that God intends ease and not hardship (Qur’an 2:185).
Frequently asked questions
Which country has the longest fast in 2027?
Generally high-latitude southern-hemisphere locations, since February is their summer. Open a city page for an exact figure rather than relying on a rough table.
Does a longer fast carry more reward?
The texts do not tie reward to hours. What is described is fasting out of faith and seeking reward (Sahih al-Bukhari 38), which applies equally to a twelve-hour fast and a nineteen-hour one.
Can I follow another country’s timings?
No. The fast is tied to the sun where you are. The exception is the specific rulings for regions with no normal day and night.
