Pregnancy, Breastfeeding and Fasting
The concession
Pregnant and breastfeeding women who fear harm to themselves or the child may break the fast; the Prophet ﷺ said Allah has relieved the traveller of half the prayer and relieved the pregnant and breastfeeding woman of the fast (Sunan an-Nasa’i 2274).
Qada or fidya?
Scholars differ: some require only making up the days, some fidya, and some both, depending on whether the fear was for herself, the child, or both. Follow the position of your school or scholar.
Medical care
- Discuss it at an antenatal appointment before Ramadan.
- Watch for reduced fetal movement, dizziness, contractions or reduced milk supply — break the fast and seek care.
- Prioritise fluid and protein between Iftar and Suhoor.
Health note: this is general information, not medical advice. If you are pregnant, nursing, elderly, or managing diabetes, kidney disease, blood pressure or any chronic condition, speak to your doctor before Ramadan. Break your fast if you fear harm — Islam requires it.
Frequently asked questions
Can a breastfeeding mother fast safely?
Some can, particularly with an older baby also eating solids. Milk supply and maternal hydration should be monitored closely.
