Avoiding Weight Gain in Ramadan

Why it happens

Fewer meals but denser ones: fried starters, sweets, sugary drinks and late-night snacking easily exceed a normal day’s intake, while daytime activity falls.

What to change

  • Serve Iftar on a normal plate, not a buffet spread.
  • Bake or grill instead of deep frying.
  • Limit sweets to two or three nights a week.
  • Replace sugary drinks with water, laban or unsweetened tea.
  • Walk 20–30 minutes after Taraweeh.
  • Keep resistance training twice weekly.

Do not crash-diet

Under-eating at Suhoor backfires, causing intense hunger at Iftar. Steady, adequate meals are what keeps intake controlled.

Health note: this is general information, not medical advice. If you are pregnant, nursing, elderly, or managing diabetes, kidney disease, blood pressure or any chronic condition, speak to your doctor before Ramadan. Break your fast if you fear harm — Islam requires it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lose weight during Ramadan?

Moderate loss is achievable with controlled portions and evening activity, but Ramadan’s purpose is worship, not a diet plan.
