Taraweeh Prayer Guide for Ramadan

When Taraweeh is prayed

Taraweeh is a voluntary night prayer performed after Isha during Ramadan. Mosques may begin shortly after the Isha congregation and may complete different portions of the Qur’an each night. The starting clock time therefore depends on the mosque schedule, not only the calculated entry of Isha.

Number of rak‘ahs

Muslim communities follow more than one recognised practice regarding the number of units. Rather than presenting one local custom as the only valid practice, this guide distinguishes the shared principle—standing in voluntary night prayer during Ramadan—from differences in how communities organise it.

Witr

Witr is normally the closing prayer of the night. Someone who expects to pray later may organise Witr according to the practice they follow. The practical point for a timetable is that Taraweeh and Witr are worship schedules, not additional astronomical prayer-time events.

Planning around Suhoor

For long Taraweeh nights, leave enough time for sleep, hydration and Suhoor. The site’s prayer finder can supply Isha and Fajr for the selected city; your mosque’s congregation timetable supplies the actual Taraweeh start.

Qur’an completion schedules

Some mosques aim to complete the Qur’an over the month; others recite shorter portions. Neither choice changes the entry time of Isha. Check the mosque’s published congregation schedule if you need to plan transport, childcare or medication.

Prayer length and accessibility

Older worshippers, people with disability and those recovering from illness may need seating or shorter attendance. Mosque accessibility information is more useful than telling every reader to remain for the same duration.

Congregation time is not an astronomical calculation

An app can calculate when Isha enters, but only the mosque can tell you when its congregation and Taraweeh actually begin. Some mosques delay Isha, run two sessions or change the start through the month as twilight changes.

Qur’an completion

Many congregations distribute a complete Qur’an recitation across Ramadan, while others read shorter portions. Completing the Qur’an in Taraweeh is a community practice and should not be represented as a condition for Taraweeh to be valid.

If praying at home

A person may pray voluntary night prayer at home. Avoid presenting a complicated app-generated sequence as mandatory; users should follow the prayer practice taught by the school or scholar they trust.
