Ramadan Rules for Beginners
The core rules
- Fast from Fajr to Maghrib every day of the month.
- Make the intention before dawn.
- Pray the five daily prayers; Taraweeh at night is highly recommended.
- Avoid arguing, backbiting and false speech — the Prophet ﷺ taught that a fasting person who is provoked should say, “I am fasting” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1894).
- Break the fast promptly at Maghrib.
- Pay Zakat al-Fitr before the Eid prayer.
Common beginner mistakes
- Skipping Suhoor, which makes the day much harder.
- Overeating at Iftar and then feeling unwell for Taraweeh.
- Forgetting that anger and gossip damage the fast’s purpose.
- Not planning make-up fasts for missed days.
Start gradually
If Ramadan is new to you, cut caffeine a week early, drink well between Iftar and Suhoor, and set realistic Qur’an goals — a few pages a day sustained is better than a burst that stops.

Frequently asked questions
Can I brush my teeth while fasting?
Yes. Scholars permit it while advising care not to swallow water or paste; using a miswak is a Sunnah practice.
Does taking a shower break the fast?
No. Bathing, swimming and cooling off do not break the fast as long as water is not deliberately swallowed.
