Fasting and Exercise
Yes, you can train
Most healthy adults can maintain training through Ramadan by changing the timing and volume rather than stopping.
Best windows
- Just before Iftar — you can refuel and rehydrate immediately afterwards; keep it light to moderate.
- 1–2 hours after Iftar — the strongest option for resistance training, once digestion has settled.
- After Suhoor — suits early risers, though the fasted day that follows can feel long.
What to change
Reduce weekly volume by roughly a third, keep intensity for the main lifts, and cut long high-intensity cardio during daylight. Protein spread across Iftar and Suhoor protects muscle; aim for consistent fluids across the whole evening rather than large amounts at once.
Stop signals
Dizziness, cramping, a pounding heart or dark urine mean stop. Breaking the fast is obligatory if you genuinely fear harm.

Frequently asked questions
Will I lose muscle while fasting?
Not if you keep resistance training twice or three times a week and eat sufficient protein between Iftar and Suhoor.
Can I do cardio while fasting?
Light walking is fine for most people. Long or intense sessions are better placed after Iftar.
