Signs of Laylat al-Qadr

Reported signs

  • A calm, temperate night, neither hot nor cold (Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2192).
  • The sun rises the next morning without piercing rays, like a plate (Sahih Muslim 762).
  • Tranquillity and a sense of peace, as the verse says: “Peace it is until the emergence of dawn” (Qur’an 97:5).

Signs are recognised afterwards

Most of these are noticed the next morning, not during the night. Nobody should wait for a sign before worshipping.

If you feel nothing

The reward attaches to standing in prayer “out of faith and seeking reward” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2014) — not to an experience. A quiet, ordinary-feeling night of sincere worship may be the night itself.

Frequently asked questions

Do dreams or lights indicate the night?

Some companions reported dreams, but no sign is a condition. Do not build certainty on personal experiences.
