Date, Yoghurt and Fruit Cups for Iftar
Ingredients for 4 cups
- 2 cups plain yoghurt
- 6 dates, chopped
- 2 cups fresh fruit such as berries, mango or melon
- 2 tablespoons chopped nuts or seeds, optional
- Cinnamon or cardamom, optional
Method
- Divide half the yoghurt between four cups.
- Add fruit and chopped dates.
- Top with the remaining yoghurt and optional nuts or seeds.
- Keep refrigerated until serving.
Make-ahead
Prepare a few hours before Iftar and keep chilled. Add crunchy toppings at the last moment. For dairy allergy or intolerance, use a suitable alternative; for nut allergy, omit nuts and check all toppings for cross-contact.
Serving role
This can be a lighter dessert or a small post-Taraweeh snack. It is not a substitute for individual nutrition advice for diabetes or other conditions where carbohydrate intake needs specific management.
Choosing fruit
Use fruit that holds up well when chilled. Melon, berries, mango, peaches and pomegranate all work, but cut fruit should be refrigerated and handled with clean utensils.
Sweetness
Dates already add sweetness, so taste before adding honey or syrup. For people managing blood glucose, the carbohydrate from dates, fruit and yoghurt can still be significant; individual portions should follow their clinical plan.
Serving texture
Keep nuts, granola or seeds separate until serving so they remain crisp. If preparing for a large Iftar, label dairy-free and nut-free cups clearly to reduce accidental allergen exposure.
Assembly order
Place yoghurt at the base, add chopped fruit that tolerates storage, and keep crunchy toppings separate until serving. Dates can be chopped through the yoghurt or served whole so sweetness is adjustable.
Make-ahead limit
Prepare only as far ahead as the freshness of the fruit and dairy allow. Refrigerate promptly and keep the cups cold until serving. Discard portions that have remained at unsafe room temperature for an extended period rather than returning them to the refrigerator.
Substitutions
Use an unsweetened fortified plant yoghurt for a dairy-free version, checking allergens where nuts or soy are involved. If using frozen fruit, thaw it in the refrigerator and expect more liquid. The recipe is naturally portionable, so scale the quantities by the number of cups rather than estimating after assembly.
